Nurture, Knowledge and Nutrition (NKN)
Office Number - 214.823.8710

In January 2006, Central Dallas Ministries assumed leadership over the nationally recognized Nurture, Knowledge and Nutrition (NKN) Program. The program was formerly housed under the Greater Dallas Community of Churches, which closed its doors at the end of 2005.

"This move strengthens our connection to the community, and positions us to make a significant change in the lives of thousands of children each day," said The Rev. Gerald Britt, Executive Director of CDM.

This summer, as a sponsor of the USDA's Summer Food Service Program, NKN provided OVER 400,000 meals to children who are at risk of hunger and food insecurity.

The transition of this program from GDCC to CDM was covered by both The Dallas Morning News as well as the Dallas Business Journal. Click here for the articles.

Central Dallas Ministries is honored to carry on this important part of GDCC's legacy. This program is a critical part of our community's support system, and we will ensure that it continues its amazing growth over the coming years.

Unlike most programs of its kind, NKN's Summer Lunch Program has experienced tremendous growth over the past four years. As we continue to expand the network of sites involved in the program, we believe that this rapid growth  will continue for years to come.

This is an exciting moment in the history of both Central Dallas Ministries as well as the NKN program. Please consider joining us today!

Program Components

The Nurture, Knowledge and Nutrition (NKN) Program has two components, both of which are supported in part by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission Special Nutrition Program.

  • Summer Food and Reading Program:  Allows low-income children who qualify for the free lunch program during the school year to continue receiving free, nutritious meals during the summer vacation months.  Also provides free books to children and trained volunteers to act as Reading Buddies to children.

  • After School At-Risk Snack Program.  Partners with existing after school programs to provide free nutritious snacks and other resources to address the problem of poor academic performance, inadequate after school care and poor nutritional options for children living in low-income communities of Dallas.  To receive these snacks sites must qualify as a low-income community and provide academic programs such as tutoring, homework assistance, etc.

Both programs receive additional resources such as volunteer training, background checks on site supervisors, training for site supervisors, free books, school supplies, reading incentives for the children and assistance with enrolling families with the TexCare health insurance programs.
